THE INDEPENDENT OWNERS OF SHOP ‘N SAVE BAND TOGETHER TO CONTRIBUTE $10,000 IN COVID-19 RELIEF EFFORTS

SHOP ‘n SAVE Pledges Thousands to Local Food Banks, Offers Additional Discounts to Populations In Need

PITTSBURGH – April 13, 2020 – As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect communities nationwide, SHOP ‘n SAVE, the independently owned and operated grocery chain with more than 80 stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, New York and West Virginia, is giving back to the regions that it serves with a $10,000 donation to benefit the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and the Westmoreland County Food Bank. The donation, funded by the brand’s independent retailers, is equivalent to 50,000 meals. The funds will benefit 12 local counties, providing support to food banks for supplying food items, stocking sanitation equipment, compensating essential employees and providing additional resources to populations in need.

“The customers and employees of SHOP ‘n SAVE have felt the impact of COVID-19 hit close to home in unique ways,” said Don Fabian, senior merchandiser, UNFI. “We’ve watched our communities respond to this unprecedented situation with strength and resilience — and we’ve been awestruck by the continued optimism and everyday acts of kindness witnessed from shoppers and staff alike. It’s truly been a moving experience. The independent retailers across SHOP ‘n SAVE locations feel strongly about doing their part as well by giving back to organizations and populations in need during these uncertain times.”

“We are extremely grateful to SHOP ‘n SAVE for their financial contribution during this global pandemic," said Lisa Scales, president and CEO of Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. "They have always been a great partner and this donation will allow us to feed more of our neighbors, so that putting food on the table is one less worry for them in this uncertain time."

To further support those impacted by COVID-19, SHOP ‘n SAVE is going beyond its $10,000 contribution to offer organizations with additional means for serving local communities. From now until May 9, food banks, food kitchens and food pantries across the region will receive a 10 percent discount on all SHOP ‘n SAVE gift cards, enabling select organizations to purchase and distribute a larger number of gift cards at a significantly lower price.

“Our hope is that these charitable organizations can supply SHOP ‘n SAVE gift cards to families who may require extra assistance in buying grocery staples like milk, bread, paper goods and so on,” continued Fabian. “We recognize that hundreds of customers may be facing challenges they’ve never faced before and wanted to offer additional resources to help them address these needs.”

The owners of SHOP ‘n SAVE are continuing to give back in their respective communities as well. In addition to the food bank donation and discount on gift cards, several retailers have established programs for making additional contributions at the independent store-level. Details about these programs can be found inside participating stores.
