Full-Service Grocery Store To Eradicate 30-Year Food Desert, Bolster Economy and Provide Value to Community
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – October 2, 2013 – Residents of Pittsburgh’s Hill District who have long been without a full-service grocery store that offers affordable and quality fresh food in their neighborhood will finally be able to shop locally when a new SHOP ‘n SAVE® store opens on Centre Ave. on October 17. SHOP ‘n SAVE will be the first grocery store option for Hill District residents in more than three decades and will bring more than 100 new jobs to the area.
The new SHOP ‘n SAVE store will open in collaboration with the Hill House Economic Development Corporation (HHEDC), which diligently worked to secure funding for the long-time project and eliminate the long-standing Pittsburgh food desert.
“We commend the HHEDC for being a tremendous partner bringing everyone together to make this project come to life,” said Bob Holmes, Area Sales Director for SUPERVALU, which supplies the independently owned and operated SHOP ‘n SAVE stores. “We’re excited to be a part of the community and bring the many perks that SHOP ‘n SAVE offers to residents of the Hill District and its surrounding area.”
Built from the ground up, the new 29,500-square-foot SHOP ‘n SAVE store, which will be independently owned and operated by Jeff Ross, will provide a wide variety of fresh produce and prepared food options, along with an expanded dairy and frozen foods section and full-service deli, bakery and meat departments with on-site butcher. State-of-the-art refrigeration, lighting, and display cases provide the store with increased energy efficiency and shoppers will eventually have access to a bank within the store. Expanded customer service offerings will include custom cake orders, money orders, postage and lottery, bill pay, ATM, MoneyGram, coin counter, Redbox and Rug Doctor.
“Not only are we proud to be opening up another SHOP ‘n SAVE store, but my family and I are thrilled to be a part of the Hill District and Downtown Pittsburgh community for many years to come,” said Jeff Ross, owner of the Centre Avenue SHOP ‘n SAVE. “The new location will bring new jobs to the region and will while provide shoppers with the quality and value that the area has been missing for more than 30 years.”
Owner, Jeff Ross currently operates four additional SHOP 'n SAVE stores in Western Pennsylvania – two in McKeesport, one in Connellsville and one in Mt. Pleasant.
The new SHOP ‘n SAVE in the Hill District brings SHOP ‘n SAVE’s legendary “2 Day Sale,” “Pump Perks,” weekly specials and everyday savings to Hill District residents, as well as surrounding neighborhoods, including nearby Duquesne University. In addition, SHOP 'n SAVE customers can redeem their Pump PERKS at local participating Sunoco gas stations, including the locations at 2350 Centre Ave. and 195 North Craig St.
On Oct. 17, a press conference will be held at 10 a.m. to celebrate the store’s official grand opening, which will immediately be followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the store. The store is located at 1850 Centre Ave. Pittsburgh, PA 15219 and will be open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily. For more information, please visit www.shopnsavefood.com.
