PITTSBURGH – July 12, 2013 – For the thirteenth year SHOP ‘n SAVE®, the independently owned and operated grocery chain with more than 90 stores in Western Pa., Maryland, New York, Ohio and West Virginia, will serve as the presenting sponsor of the annual Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix (PVGP). The PVGP is America’s largest vintage race and features more than 10 days of events and activities. Events began on July 7 with a kickoff rally and will run through July 21. To date, SHOP ‘n SAVE’s combined efforts have helped fuel more than $3.2 Million in donations for PVGP charities, The Autism Society of Pittsburgh and Allegheny Valley School.
“SHOP ‘n SAVE has spent more than a decade as presenting sponsor of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix and it serves as a reflection of our retailers’ commitment to help raise money for The Autism Society of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny Valley School,” said Rich Haeflein, advertising account manager for SUPERVALU, which supplies the independently owned and operated SHOP ‘n SAVE stores.
As in previous years, SHOP ‘n SAVE will host a hospitality tent during the signature race weekend (July 20-21) that is open to the public and located on the Schenley Park Golf Course in Oakland. Event attendees can have their picture taken at the Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile, experience the Kellog’s Racecar Simulator, see 1930’s sprint race car, “Rex’s Rocket,” and listen to music provided by the Street Level Band, a local and popular band, among other amenities. Silver Star Meats, locally owned since 1964, will serve its hot dogs, and the 13-foot Turkey Hill swirled cow mascot will be handing out free ice cream samples. The hospitality tent is free to the public, but donations are requested. All proceeds are contributed to the PVGP charities.
New this year, the Carnegie Science Center will be doing demonstrations of their “Fire and Ice” assembly—one of many offered from the Science Center in conjunction with SHOP ‘n SAVE’s S.E.E.D. Program, which provides local schools access to interactive assemblies through the SHOP ‘n SAVE Perks Card. This audience-participation game show pits the Fire Team against the Ice Team in a series of exciting and explosive visual demonstrations. Hospitality Tent visitors will have a chance to register their Perks Card with a local school in order to contribute earnings for assemblies to the school of their choice.
Additionally, SHOP ‘n SAVE is giving 14 lucky fans a chance to ride a hot lap on the Schenley Park race course in front of thousands of spectators during the Sunoco Vintage Lap Experience. From July 11-17, fans are encouraged to visit SHOP ‘n SAVE’s website and enter their email address for a chance to win a lap in the pace car during race weekend on Saturday, July 20.
“SHOP ‘n SAVE has been a driving force for this event for 13 years. We continue to be impressed with their dedication to our event and our charities,” said PVGP Executive Director Dan DelBianco. “The retailers take an active role in the Grand Prix with their Hospitality Tent at the races and through their local store promotions. It has been a great partnership that has doubled our charitable contributions and fueled the tremendous growth of our event worldwide.”
