PITTSBURGH , Pa-.- July 26, 2011-- In 2009 the Ambridge SHOP 'n SAVE quadrupled the size of its produce section thanks to a state grant from the Pennsylvania Fresh Food Financing Initiative. Produce manager Josephine Grossi noticed a substantial difference in the way her customers went about their shopping and the additional healthy foods they left the store with. On July 20 – Josephine's 70th birthday – she was given the opportunity to share that message with the entire nation. Josephine joined first lady Michelle Obama in announcing that the Partnership for a Healthier America and SUPERVALU have committed to open 250 new Save-A-Lot stores over the next five years in and around neighborhoods with limited or no immediate access to healthier foods, such as fresh fruits, vegetables and meat -- areas known as food deserts. The first lady is on a campaign to bring down childhood obesity rates. Increased access to fresh and healthy foods is part of that effort.
"Meeting the first lady and speaking at the White House was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Josie Grossi, produce manager, Ambridge SHOP 'n SAVE. "I'm so proud to be a part of the mission SUPERVALU, SHOP 'n SAVE and Mrs. Obama are leading – ending childhood obesity and bringing healthier, more nutritional, food to everyone in our nation."
The new Save-A-Lot stores will provide approximately 3.75 million people each week with healthier, affordable food options and, at the same time, create more than 6,000 new jobs in these communities.
